Buildings project fashion an architect research

THE ARCHITECT AND THE FASHION DESIGNER

NEW YEAR, new fashion happening to start the countdown to - this time, courtesy of one Alexander McQueen and friends. McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Hussein Chalayan are just some of the world-class British designers representing the fashion industry in a new exhibition, SKIN+BONES: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture, which opens at London's Somerset House next April. Focussing on the "visual and conceptual ideas that unite fashion and architecture, dating from the Eighties to the present day", the show will feature around 200 works - among them iconic garments, three-dimensional architectural models and film footage arranged in a series of themes such as shelter, identity, folding and draping - within a new installation designed by Eva Jiricna in the house's grounds. Boudicca, Comme des Garcons, Martin Margiela, Viktor & Rolf, Junya Watanabe, and Yohji Yamamoto are also involved, while Zaha Hadid, David Adjaye, Frank Gehry and Thomas Heatherwick are flying the flag for the architects. SKIN+BONES: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture runs from April 24 to August 10 2008 at Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 1LA; for more information, visit www.somersethouse.org.
